Business and legal papers concerning Virginia and Maryland [manuscript], 1735-1870.

The papers include part of a letterbook, 1735-1737, of John Allen, Virginia merchant, pertaining to shipment of dry goods, wine, millstones, and tobacco; West Indies trade; and accounts; and includes a letter, Feb. 1736, in which Allen complains to Peter Furnell, Jamaica, about his inability to sell the slave woman Furnell sent to him in trade for rum because she is more expensive than other slaves in his area. Also included are a land grant, 1741, for Orange County, Va.; an indenture, 1789, for land in Talbot County, Md.; an indenture, 1792, for land in Chesterfield County, Va.; and three powers of attorney, 1837, authorizing John A. Parker to sell land in Westmoreland, Fairfax, and Botetourt counties, Va. Also included are a letter, 1839, concerning debt owed to S.D. Watkins, Va.; a certificate, 1841, of drafts on Richard S. Coxe, Washington D.C.; a certificate, 1844, concerning a deed on land in Iowa; a letter, 1845, from T.R. Love, Va., enclosing a copy of a judge's opinion in a lawsuit; and a letter, 1845, concerning land claims in Va. Also included are a letter, 1847, from Hugh C. Smith, Alexandria, Va., concerning the naming of appraisers in an estate settlement; a letter of recommendation, 1853, for Douglas B. Layne for a political appointment; a bill, 1864, for John R. Mesmer for board at Fair View Hospital; and a letter of recommendation, 1870, for Thomas S. Hargest, Va.
